The Word Chain – A Tip and Trick to Try

As a writer, feeling stuck in a creativity dry spell happens to everyone. However, true writers also do not only write when inspiration comes out; they brainstorm the next thing they want to discuss or share. Your mind almost always has ideas that you can’t quite access at first thought. That’s why brainstorming is fun!

One of my favorite ways to brainstorm I learned from Dr. Thomas in my college creative writing course. For our day’s free writing, we spent five minutes creating a word chain. The words don’t have to be about a certain subject; they don’t even have to be related. The only rule for this trick is to jot down the first word you think of, and the next word must start with the last letter of the previous word. (This process repeats until the five-minute timer is finished.)

I included a visual to help my visual learners get the idea, as well. I highly recommend giving this a try and realizing how much creativity it may spark! If you do try it, let me know how it went in the comments or tag #jessemmckeown on social media!

Have a great rest of your day, friends!
